The Deputy Trauma Course (DTC) was created in 2010 by members of the Operational Medical Support Unit, with consultation from doctors at Johns Hopkins Emergency Medicine- Division of Special Operations. The DTC class is an 8-hour blended class with a 3 ½ hour power point presentation, an hour lunch break, followed by 4 hours of force-on-force scenarios with simunitions. The DTC class is instructed by DUSM Medics of the USMS Operational Medic Support Unit (OMSU). These OMSU Medics possess and keep current with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) standards and certification.

The class overview covers areas such as the Tactical Combat Casualty Care Principles (T-CCC), recognizing the preventable causes of death in a combat setting, and possessing and using the proper application of medical interventions to save yourself or fellow officers. Moreover, the class covers mental preparation, “immediate action principles” (1. Identify the threat 2. Return fire 3. Seek cover 4. Tend to your injuries, communicate with your partner/and or your team 5. Check weapon status 6. Get back in the fight or find an exit), outfitting your medical gear roll out and emergency medical planning.

Students should wear clothing they normally wear when going to the range. Jeans, 5-11 pants, vertex pants, tactical pants, long sleeve shirts, Tactical gloves, boots or gym shoes and their work vest carrier (with ballistic panels) with mag pouches, gun belt and/or duty belt and holsters. NO shorts, tank tops, dresses or open-faced shoes for this training.

All necessary safety and training equipment will be provided by the USMS. However, the participating departments will need to supply 50 (9mm sim rounds) of simunitions for each officer sent to the training.
